The mission of this organization is to afford inpoverished families with services to improve their quality of life. The Lighthouse Community Center which is a Faith Based, Non-profit organization was established and founded by Jeanetta Williams. Mrs. Williams had the vision to improve the literacy rate within the city of Detroit and to provide services for impoverished African American families, and so she began within her local community providing such services as tutoring and youth projects. The very first event sponsored by The Lighthouse Community Center was a Non-Vioence essay contest where students were given a forum to read their essay in front of family, peers and the community.
Each student was rewarded and encouraged to act upon their ides to maintain peace within their own communities. The Lighthousre began volunteering in Detroit Public Schools tutoring, and etablishing writing and reading workshops. Malcolm X Academy, Thurgood Marshall, and City High School were amongst the first schools to receive this service. The Lighthouse Community Center sponsors yearly Drug and Violence Prevention projects. The Lighthouse plans to secure a location in both Wayne and Macomb Counties to futher serve impoverished families.
Another major event was the first annual Black Businesses United Expo held at Hotel St. Regis in April of 2003. This Business networking and sales event hosted nearly 300 participants. The Conference motivated new entreprenuers.
